MSRTC starts on-board catering to its Pune passengers

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has planned to start on-board catering services in five buses plying on the Pune-Dadar-Pune route by next month. Passengers will soon be able to purchase snacks, fruit juices, cold drinks, tea/coffee during the journey. So the journey for passengers on board of Shivneri (Volvo) buses would got more comfortable.

The MSRTC has floated tenders for appointment of private parties to provide the food items. The services will be offered on a pilot basis for a period of one year. MSRTC will be implementing the project on 20 trips between Pune and Dadar. This will be the corporation's first such initiative, MSRTC said.

The Shivneri buses travel via the expressway. As per the preliminary plan, an authorised sales person/agent of the appointed firm will travel in the bus with the food items. The buses will, however, continue to halt at the food mall despite the in-house catering services. The services will benefit those passengers who do not wish to get down from the bus at the halts. Senior citizens, ladies and children will benefit from the on-board services, MSRTC sources said.

The official said that the corporation was working on the proposal of on-board catering services for the last several months. The aim is to provide additional services to esteemed passengers. The catering initiative will be extended on other Shivneri routes depending on the response to the pilot project, said official.

The MSRTC, at present, offers a water bottle and a newspaper to the passengers of Shivneri buses, while some buses play radio-FM channels during the journey.

The MSRTC operates Shivneri buses on Pune-Dadar route with a frequency of 15 minutes, while Shivneri on Thane and Borivli routes are operated with a frequency of one hour. The MSRTC has recently introduced Shivneri buses on the Swargate-Dadar route. All routes are operated with an occupancy of around 70 per cent.
