Kolkata Port aims to advance Rs 2400 cr projects under Gati Shakti

Kolkata Port, now known as Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port (SMP), the company is aiming to advance the implementation targets of the Rs 2400 crore projects under the PM Gati Shakti plan.

An official said the port wants to make Kolkata a leading cruising destination in the eastern region, and it is planning a Rs 66 crore project to build three to four cruise terminals, as well as riverfront beautification and commercial development, on a 31-acre plot in the city's Khidderpore neighbourhood.

The Gati Shakti projects aim to reduce India's logistics costs of India from 6-8%, in line with global standards from 13-14%.

According to him, the projects will have an impact on sustainability and reduce pollution in the city.

SMP has the distinct advantage of having rail, road, and inland water connectivity National Waterways 1 and 2. This opens up a plethora of opportunities for stakeholders to use the port ecosystem to create a sustainable ecosystem for goods transit.

Following the successful handover of berth two to the Adani Group to install rapid loading systems, Kumar said the port is looking to modernise more berths at Haldia through a public-private partnership (PPP).

Kumar told the media that the Kolkata Port's extended gate will be built in Balagarh, about 80 km from Kolkata, and will have four to six berths. However, it will begin with only two berths.

Kumar informed that the port authorities will conduct a study for a new road tunnel beneath the Hooghly River connecting Kolkata and Howrah. These projects are intended to assist the city in lowering pollution levels.
