Chief Minister Rekha Gupta launched a door-to-door waste collection and secondary transportation project in west Delhi and flagged off 917 garbage collection vehicles. The project will cover around 0.45 million (mn) households in 25 wards. Under the first phase the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will start work in six wards and the remaining 19 wards will be covered by August, the Chief Minister's Office said. The fleet comprises 225 e-rickshaws for narrow lanes, 550 mini tippers, 52 compactors, 41 hook loaders, 28 mini trucks, 10 dumpers and six bin washers. It also includes 123 Fixed Compacter Transfer Station bins and 1.1 cubic metre (cbm) bins for biomedical waste with a capacity of 1,300 litres. Digital monitoring will be implemented through a GPS-enabled central control room, the eSBM app, CCTV surveillance and a dedicated helpline. Traditional dhalaos are being replaced with modern, clean and odour-free Fixed Compaction Transfer Stations as part of the initiative. Gupta interacted with sanitation workers and shared a meal with them, appreciating their service and acknowledging their contribution to building a cleaner Delhi. Present on the occasion were the Delhi Urban Development minister Ashish Sood, the Environment minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Delhi Mayor Pravesh Wahi and senior MCD officers. The urban development minister said the project would ensure timely door-to-door waste collection, technology-driven monitoring and an improved grievance redressal mechanism. The environment minister said the administration had ensured household waste would now be collected twice a day, once in the morning and again in the evening rather than only once previously. He added that work to eliminate the city’s garbage mountains at three landfill sites was progressing at an unprecedented pace and that over 70 acres out of 200 acres of landfill sites had been cleared of legacy waste. Officials said the deployment of a mixed fleet with e-rickshaws and compactors is intended to improve access, reduce odour and speed secondary transport to transfer stations, while digital tools will allow real-time tracking and quicker redressal of complaints. The project will roll out in phases with continuous monitoring and evaluation to ensure operational efficiency and environmental benefits for residents across west Delhi.
