Delhi Launches Rs. 90 bn Projects for Yamuna Rejuvenation

Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said projects valued at approximately Rs. 90 bn had been inaugurated to accelerate the rejuvenation of the Yamuna and strengthen the capital’s water infrastructure. She described the initiative as a major step towards making the river clean and ensuring an uninterrupted flow in the coming years.

Gupta said the government had made continuous progress on the Yamuna during its first one and a half years in office. She identified the completion of the Chandrawal water project, which had remained stalled for several years, as a significant achievement for Delhi.

The latest investment follows projects valued at Rs. 90 to 100 bn that were initiated last year, according to the Chief Minister. The funds are being directed towards broader infrastructure development, with priority given to sewerage and wastewater treatment systems connected to the Yamuna’s cleanup.

The government’s plan includes extending sewer lines across the city, linking all sewer connections to sewage treatment plants and installing treatment facilities at every drain. Gupta said the work was being undertaken according to a scientific roadmap and that officials were working continuously to meet the target of restoring the river.

She also acknowledged support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency for several Delhi projects, including the Metro and initiatives implemented by the Water Department. Gupta congratulated Delhi’s Water Minister, the department and officials involved in delivering the projects.

Earlier, Union Home Minister Amit Shah inaugurated and laid foundation stones for 43 Delhi Jal Board projects worth Rs. 89.41 bn. The projects cover wastewater treatment and drinking water infrastructure, and Shah said they would form the backbone of the Yamuna’s comprehensive rejuvenation. He added that more than 40 per cent of the journey towards the cleanup goal had already been completed since the government began its programme.
