How safe are workplaces in India?

In India, as part of its reform process, the Union Government is planning to subsume as many as 44 central labour laws in to 4 Labour Codes - on wages, industrial relations, social security and occupational safety, health and working conditions. Critics argue that the proposed Labour Codes overlook workers’ safety as the draft code looks to reduce safety inspections for companies deploying fewer than 500 people.

It is said that India has the best safety standards and safety protocols for industrial safety in the world, but very rarely they are visible at the ground level in most of the factories across the country. A worker, being the mainstay of every manufacturing unit, is a crucial human resource whose wellbeing is vital, not only for his family, but also for the industry. Globally, awareness about health and safety at workplace is increasing.

In India, around 80% of the estimated 465 million-strong workforce are not protected by the existing health and safety legal framework. Will the new Labour Codes change this scenario?
The Webinar will discuss:

  • Present scenario in occupational safety and health standards in India (especially against the current Coranvirus pandemic)
  • Proposed changes in safety & health laws under the new Labour Code
  • Importance of safety audits of plants and factories
  • How to ensure zero injury at workplaces
  • Role of personal protective equipment (PPE) is ensuring worker’s safety
  • Q&A
  • Moderator: Pratap Padode, Editor-in-Chief, Industrial Product Finder

    Panelists:
Hemant Sethi, Country Head, British Safety Council India
