Shielding Machines

Telcon has partnered with Hitachi Zosen Corporation, Japan, to offer the latest technology in shield tunnelling machines to Indian customers.

Telcon, a leading Indian construction equipment company, offers the latest technology in shield tunnelling machines to Indian customers in a JV with Hitachi Zosen, which has delivered more than 1,200 units to customers around the world since 1967.

TBM functions

Shield TBM technology creates underground spaces for railways, roads, new physical distribution systems, energy-related facilities, and their application expands to huge underground cities. Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM) have one or two large metal cylinders (shields) mounted on a trailing support mechanism. The front of the shield has a rotating cutting wheel followed by a chamber where the excavated material is either mixed with water to make slurry or left as it is. A system to remove the excavated material completes the TBM.

Major types

The JV will offer soft and hard ground TBMs. Soft ground TBMs include Earth Pressure Balance Machines (EPB) and Slurry Shield (SS), which operate like the Single Shield TBMs, using thrust cylinders to advance forward by pushing off against concrete segments. SS TBMs are needed in soft ground with high water pressure and large amounts of ground water. These can be applied to large-diameter tunnels and high water-bearing tunnels, while EPB can be applied to a range of ground types and makes handling of excavated soil easier than the SS tunnelling machine.

Close- or open-type TBMs can be used as hard rock TBMs to excavate rock using disc cutters mounted on the cutter heads to crush boulders and bedrock for excavation.

Back-up systems

All TBMs have trailing support decks called the back-up system with support mechanisms that include conveyors and systems for muck removal, slurry pipelines, etc.
