India's Border Roads Organisation (BRO) has recently completed the highest motorable road in the world, along the Umling La pass in Ladakh. For Brigadier DM Purvimath, the Chief Engineer of the project, evidently constructing this has not been an easy task. The road reaches an elevation of more than 5,880 m of 19,300 ft. The 86-km-long road connects the remote villages of Demchok and Chisumle, and lies around 230 km from Leh. While machine and equipment breakdowns were common, and repairing and maintaining them at such extreme altitudes were reported as massive challenges, the men and machines- under Purvimath's guidance - pulled through working hard to complete this vital road. The successful completion of this road is a feather in the cap for not just Purvimath but also BRO's Project Himank.
