SK Gupta, Chairman and Managing Director, GAIL, helms the company which has done the world's first ship-to-ship (STS) liquefied natural gas (LNG) transfer between a large conventional LNG vessel and a Q-Flex LNG vessel to save on shipping costs and cut emissions. The LNG ship travels 19,554 nautical miles in about 54 days from Sabine Pass in the US to India via the Suez Canal to bring this volume to India and emits about 15,600 tonne of CO2. However, GAIL's innovative contractual arrangement has resulted in savings of about 8,736 nautical miles, equivalent to 7,000 tonne of CO2 emissions. Also, this has shortened the GAIL vessel’s voyage from 54 to about 27 days. If this concept is scaled up considering two cargoes per month, it would result in distance savings of 209,664 nautical miles per year and result in an emission saving of 167,731 tonne of CO2.
