Indian Railways Records 22.5% Growth in October Coal Loading

Indian Railways recorded a 22.5 per cent increase in coal loading up to October 18, 2026, compared with the corresponding period a year earlier. The performance marked an all-time high for October and reflected efforts to maintain reliable fuel supplies for thermal power plants amid rising energy requirements.

The Railways dispatched 87 more coal rakes per day during the period than in the corresponding period of October 2025. The increase strengthened the movement of coal from production centres to power generation facilities and supported the wider freight operations required by the energy sector.

The growth followed a consistent performance during the first half of financial year 2026-27. During this period, Indian Railways dispatched an average of 430 coal rakes a day to thermal power plants, representing 7.1 per cent growth over the corresponding period of the previous financial year. Daily dispatches had also increased by 14 per cent in September 2026 compared with September 2025.

The higher transportation volumes came as energy consumption increased across the country. Rising industrial production and deficient rainfall in some parts of India contributed to stronger demand for coal-based power generation, increasing the importance of regular coal evacuation and timely deliveries to consuming centres.

Indian Railways coordinated with the Ministry of Coal to improve coal evacuation and with the Ministry of Power to sustain the movement of fuel and support adequate stocks at thermal power plants. The inter-ministerial effort is intended to reduce supply disruptions, support uninterrupted electricity generation and strengthen the country’s energy supply chain. The October loading record and H1 performance underline the Railways’ role in supporting power security through dependable freight transportation.
