India’s Coal Production Passes 1 Billion Tonne Milestone in FY 2024-25

India’s coal sector has achieved a historic milestone, surpassing 1 billion tonnes (BT) in cumulative production for the financial year 2024-25, highlighting the Ministry of Coal’s sustained efforts to boost production, streamline dispatches, and enhance energy security.

Total coal production for FY 2024-25 has reached 1,047.57 million tonnes (MT) (provisional), reflecting a 4.99% growth over the 997.83 MT recorded in FY 2023-24. The Commercial & Captive segment also saw a sharp increase, producing 197.50 MT (provisional), a 28.11% rise from the 154.16 MT recorded in the previous year.

Coal dispatches have also exceeded 1 billion tonnes, reaching 1,024.99 MT (provisional) in FY 2024-25, up 5.34% from 973.01 MT in FY 2023-24. Dispatches from Commercial & Captive entities surged 31.39%, reaching 196.83 MT (provisional) compared to 149.81 MT in the previous year.

This achievement reinforces India’s commitment to increasing domestic coal production, ensuring efficient distribution, and reducing import dependence. The Ministry of Coal continues to focus on self-reliance, sustainability, and economic resilience to support the nation’s growing energy demands.
