Delhi CM Launches Rs. 160 mn Biogas Plant in Najafgarh

Delhi chief minister Rekha Gupta inaugurated a biogas plant at Goyla in southwest Delhi’s Najafgarh on Monday. Built by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) at a cost of Rs. 160 mn, the facility has a processing capacity of 200 tonnes per day and will treat cattle dung collected from dairy colonies.

Officials said the plant is intended to prevent cattle dung from entering drains and eventually reaching the Yamuna. It is expected to generate around 14,000 cubic metres of raw biogas and approximately 5.6 tonnes of purified compressed biogas each day. The gas will be supplied to Indraprastha Gas through a pipeline, while the residual slurry will be used as organic fertiliser.

Gupta said the Delhi government had started work on three biogas plants during the past 18 months, with six more facilities being developed. She also said Rs. 500 mn had been allocated in the Budget for improving drainage systems in the city’s dairy colonies. The administration has linked the projects to clean fuel production, soil improvement and efforts to reduce pollution entering the river.

MCD estimates show that authorised dairies house 123,164 cattle, while more than 500 unauthorised gaushalas collectively generate around 1,500 tonnes of dung daily. Only about 200 tonnes is currently processed, leaving a gap of approximately 1,000 tonnes per day. The figures were submitted as part of a Yamuna clean-up exercise overseen by the Union home ministry.

Delhi’s first large-scale 200 tonnes-per-day plant was inaugurated at Nangli Dairy in Najafgarh in September 2025, followed by a 100 tonnes-per-day facility at Ghogha Dairy last month. Additional plants planned for several dairy colonies will take the city’s total processing capacity to 1,625 tonnes per day when completed. The projects are expected to be completed by June 2027.
