Tata Power Skill Development Institute Trains 13,527 people in FY2018

Tata Power has been relentlessly working to bridge the skilled labour gap in the Indian power sector. In line with this focus, Tata Power, through its skill development endeavor, Tata Power Skill Development Institute (TPSDI) has successfully trained 13,527 people in FY2018, thereby enhancing their employability prospect.

To date, TPSDI has trained more than 27,000 people across India in modular training courses that are purposefully designed to be market driven in the power and allied sectors. This year, TPSDI has seen a 13 per cent increase in people trained when compared to FY2017, that witnessed 11,898 students trained under various skill development programmes.

TPSDI is Tata Power’s commitment to the Government of India’s call to skill India and has set up five training hubs in five locations in the country leveraging the facilities of Tata Power, which includes Shahad – Mumbai, Maharashtra; Trombay – Mumbai, Maharashtra; Maithon – Dhanbad, Jharkhand, Mundra – Kutch, Gujarat and Jojobera – Jamshedpur, Jharkhand.

TPSDI also introduced Skills on Wheels, a mobile concept to make skill trainings more accessible to people. Through this 'Mobile' training and assessment centre, TPSDI will provide Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), training and accreditation to neighbourhood electricians as well.

Speaking about this achievement, Anil Sardana, CEO & Managing Director, Tata Power, said, “TPSDI was set up with an aim of serving the nation by skilling employable youth as well as to bridge the skilled labour gap faced by the power sector. With the best training facilities and design that imparts courses in the best possible manner, TPSDI is steadily serving the purpose it was intended for. TPSDI's unique certification system will be a great value addition for both – the learners and the Industry. We are extremely happy that 13,527 people have been trained by our centres this year. By getting skilled, these students will find great value for themselves and will also be able to contribute more productively at their workplace.”

Apart from electrical competencies, TPSDI also focuses on other dimensions of skill building, such as numerical ability, science, basic IT, industry orientation, communication, soft skills and personality development, work ethics, and places special emphasis on safety, health and environment considering the sector's specific need. The training consists of both knowledge and hands-on skills. The institute consciously works towards providing greater access to its courses to the members of disadvantaged sections of the society as part of its Affirmative Action Policy and also reach out to those in the below-poverty-line (BPL) category.
