Australia and India to Accelerate Global Clean Energy Transition

Australia and India can accelerate the global transition to clean energy by combining Australian engineering expertise and critical mineral resources with India’s manufacturing capabilities, Australian High Commissioner to India Philip Green said at the Renewable Energy India Expo 2026 and The Battery Show India in Greater Noida. The partnership could also strengthen supply chains, expand clean energy deployment and support a more secure and sustainable energy future.

Green said Australia was committed to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050 and had set a target for renewable energy to account for 82 per cent of its electricity grid by 2030. More than 30 per cent of Australian rooftops already have solar installations, while the country’s growing reliance on renewable energy has helped reduce electricity prices over the past year.

Australia has significant critical minerals capabilities, producing more than 50 per cent of the world’s lithium, holding the second-largest cobalt reserves globally and ranking among the leading countries for rare earths. These resources, combined with India’s ambitions in electric vehicle and battery manufacturing, create opportunities for expanded bilateral collaboration across the clean energy value chain.

The collaboration could also draw on Australian engineering developments, including passivated emitter and rear cell (PERC) solar cell technology developed at the University of New South Wales. The two countries could use their combined strengths to improve supply-chain resilience and support wider deployment of renewable energy, energy storage and related technologies.

Australia is represented at the three-day expo by 20 companies and 32 exhibitors. The participants are showcasing capabilities in energy storage, grid technologies, green hydrogen, digital solutions and renewable energy integration, highlighting potential areas for commercial and technological cooperation between the two countries.
