India, Scotland Discuss Cooperation in Financial Services and Energy

India and Scotland discussed ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation in financial services, renewable energy, higher education and tourism during a meeting between Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Scotland First Minister John Swinney in New Delhi on Wednesday. The discussions covered areas of mutual interest and possible avenues for expanding engagement across the four sectors, according to the Ministry of Finance.

Financial services formed a key part of the meeting, with the two sides examining opportunities for greater engagement. The discussions indicated scope for closer cooperation in a sector linked to investment and broader economic ties between India and Scotland.

Renewable energy was another major area of discussion, reflecting shared interest in clean energy development and the wider energy transition. The meeting also covered the establishment of higher educational institutions, highlighting the potential for stronger academic links and increased collaboration between institutions in the two regions.

Sitharaman and Swinney further discussed ways to enhance bilateral tourism. Greater travel and people-to-people exchanges were identified as avenues for building stronger links, alongside cooperation in education, energy and financial services.

The Ministry of Finance said the meeting took place during Swinney’s visit to New Delhi. Sitharaman holds the Finance and Corporate Affairs portfolios, while Swinney is the head of the Scottish Government. The discussions provided a broad agenda for future India-Scotland engagement, covering investment, sustainable development, education and tourism. Further dialogue between the two sides could focus on developing cooperation in the identified sectors and strengthening institutional and public connections.
