Maharashtra Animal Husbandry Department Plans Solar Projects

The Maharashtra Animal Husbandry Department plans to install solar power systems on its land and buildings, with the aim of bringing electricity bills down to zero and earning revenue from surplus energy. The initiative is also intended to reduce the department’s expenditure on conventional power and promote the use of renewable energy.

The Animal Husbandry Commissionerate signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Mahatma Phule Renewable Energy and Infrastructure Technology (MAHAPREIT) on Thursday. Under the agreement, MAHAPREIT will prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) covering proposed solar projects on property owned by the department.

The DPR will assess the availability of rooftop space and identify suitable locations for solar installations. It will also include site surveys and an examination of the technical and financial feasibility of the projects before implementation decisions are taken.

Pilot projects will be launched at two locations in the first phase. These include the rooftops of office buildings at the Animal Husbandry Commissionerate in Pune and a facility operated by the Maharashtra Livestock Development Board at Sakud in Ambajogai taluka of Beed district.

The department expects the projects to generate power for use in its own buildings, reducing its dependence on electricity purchased from the grid. Any surplus electricity produced after meeting internal requirements could be sold, creating an additional revenue stream for the department.

MAHAPREIT, a subsidiary of the Mahatma Phule Backward Class Development Corporation, has expressed interest in implementing solar projects on land held by the department. The assessment process will determine the scale of installations and the locations that can support the programme, while the pilot sites are expected to provide an initial basis for wider deployment across departmental facilities.
