NTPC and Africa50 to Develop Power Projects in Africa

State-owned NTPC has signed an agreement with Africa50, an African infrastructure investment organisation, to jointly develop power projects and explore cross-border electricity trading opportunities across Africa. The partnership expands NTPC’s efforts to access international power markets and support energy infrastructure development on the continent.

Under the agreement, the organisations will identify commercially viable projects, attract investment and work to improve electricity supply for households and businesses across African countries. NTPC will provide technical, engineering and operational expertise to assess projects and support their development.

Africa50 will identify investment opportunities, engage with governments and regulators, and help secure financing for projects. The partnership is intended to combine NTPC’s experience in power generation and operations with Africa50’s project development capabilities and relationships across Africa.

The agreement also covers efforts to examine regional electricity trading opportunities. Africa50 said reliable and competitively priced power was important to Africa’s industrial and economic transformation, while the partnership would help translate public-sector ambitions into private investment in power generation.

The agreement does not specify an investment amount, project capacity or implementation timeline. NTPC has an installed capacity of more than 91.5 GW and aims to increase this to 149 GW by 2032, including 60 GW of renewable energy capacity.

Africa50 develops and finances projects across Africa in the energy, transport and digital sectors. The partnership is expected to create opportunities for NTPC in African power markets while supporting efforts to strengthen electricity infrastructure and regional power trade.
