UP, Maharashtra & Gujarat Account for 45 Per Cent of Rooftop Solar

India’s residential rooftop solar capacity under the PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana (PMSG: MBY) reached 17,561 MW by September 2026, covering 5,947,035 households. Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat together accounted for 45 per cent of the installed capacity, according to data compiled by JMK Research & Analytics.

Uttar Pradesh led monthly installations with 234.46 MW, followed by Maharashtra at 208.04 MW and Gujarat at 165.6 MW. Uttar Pradesh received 93,437 applications and completed 74,784 installations during the month, while Maharashtra recorded 71,371 applications and 60,453 installations. Gujarat received 152,642 applications and completed 45,221 installations, based on data from the PMSG: MBY portal.

Uttar Pradesh recorded its highest monthly capacity addition in September for the third consecutive month, although the addition was lower than the 288 MW installed in July. Capacity added in August stood at 228.95 MW before rising to 234.46 MW in September. Across India, monthly capacity additions declined for the third consecutive month, from 1,592 MW in July to 1,407.32 MW in August and 1,357.52 MW in September, a 2.2 per cent month-on-month fall.

States received 602,376 applications against 357,100 installations during September. Cumulatively, applications stood at 8,842,231 and installations at 5,080,690, taking reported installed capacity to 17,794.16 MW. Subsidies disbursed so far amounted to Rs. 336.42 bn. Uttar Pradesh had cumulative capacity of 2,942.02 MW, compared with 3,044.43 MW in Maharashtra and 3,287.39 MW in Gujarat.

A report by the Indian Solar Manufacturers Association (ISMA) said rooftop solar adoption was expanding beyond States where project economics were strongest without subsidies. It found that high-tariff States such as Maharashtra and Kerala had shorter payback periods, while Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu had lower tariffs and longer payback periods. About 60 per cent of capacity installed under PMSG: MBY is in States where rooftop solar would not yet recover its cost without policy support, the report said.
