Vikram Solar to Roll Out First Cells from 9 GW Tamil Nadu Facility

Vikram Solar said its 9 GW N-type TOPCon solar cell manufacturing facility at Gangaikondan in Tamil Nadu remains on track to produce its first cells in December 2026. The company said the full capacity would be commissioned in phases, marking the next stage of its plan to build an integrated domestic solar manufacturing operation.

The facility is intended to reduce the company’s dependence on imported cells, which remain a major component of the bill of materials for solar modules made in India. Vikram Solar said cell manufacturing is also central to determining module efficiency, reliability and cost, making the project important to its broader integration strategy.

At full capacity, Gangaikondan is expected to supply high-efficiency TOPCon cells for most of Vikram Solar’s module production. The resulting modules will be manufactured in India from cells through to frames for utility-scale and rooftop projects, as well as the PM Surya Ghar and PM-KUSUM programmes where domestic content requirements apply.

The company plans to seek Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM) List-II enlistment for cells produced at the site. The cell plant is the second of three planned phases at Gangaikondan, following the inauguration of a 6 GW module plant by the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister in August 2026.

Once completed, the campus will be among the few locations in India producing ingots, wafers, cells and modules at one site. Vikram Solar said co-location would shorten supply cycles, strengthen quality control and reduce logistics costs while creating more than 2,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities.

The facility is being developed through wholly owned subsidiary VSL Green Power on a nearly 200-acre integrated campus. The company said the project would support domestic solar manufacturing and help global customers diversify their supply chains as India expands its renewable energy equipment base.
