Implementation of Facial Recognition Technology from March 2022

There has been a delay of three years for the passengers to enjoy the benefits of facial technology at the airports. At last in the coming March of 2022, the passengers are going to be ready to use a facial scan as their boarding pass in four domestic airports.

Airports at Varanasi, Pune, Kolkata, and Vijaywada are going to be the first ones to roll out the boarding system based on facial recognition technology. This service will be going live from March 2022. Minister of State for Civil Aviation V K Singh stated the above while answering a question in the Lok Sabha.

From now onwards, the airports across the county will have furthermore updated technology. The service is to be executed as per Industry ISO standards with the help of algorithms listed by NIST in compliance with the government-stated data privacy and data protection requirements. Passenger data will be utilised only for a defined person and will be kept confidential. Shared passenger data will be retained during the transit and not after 24 hours from the departure.

NEC Corporation has been engaged in the implementation of facial recognition technology by the Airports Authority of India under the DigiYatra policy. The Yojana aims at promoting air travel that is paperless. Also making the journey at the airport from the entrance to boarding even simpler.

According to the original plan, the policy that was announced in October 2018 stated that the facial recognition rollout should have been executed in April 2019.
