HMEL signs MoUs with Emerson and AVEVA for refinery automation

HPCL-Mittal Energy (HMEL) has entered into two strategic partnerships with automation leaders Emerson and AVEVA during India Energy Week 2025 in New Delhi. These collaborations are designed to accelerate HMEL’s digital transformation by integrating advanced technologies, including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Advanced Analytics, and Real-Time Optimisers, into their refinery and petrochemical operations. The objective is to enhance process efficiency, safety, and sustainability across the company’s operations.

HMEL, a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) and Mittal Energy Investment, operates one of India’s most modern integrated refinery-petrochemical complexes, the Guru Gobind Singh Refinery in Bathinda, Punjab. The facility includes an 11.3 million tonnes per annum crude oil refinery, a 1.2 million tonnes per annum multi-feed cracker, and plants for Polyethylene (PE) and Polypropylene (PP) production. As a digital-first organization, HMEL has consistently leveraged cutting-edge technology to achieve operational excellence, profitability, and strict adherence to safety and environmental standards.

The partnership with AVEVA focuses on utilising AI and digital solutions for optimizing refining and petrochemical operations. This collaboration includes the establishment of a Centre of Excellence for analytics-driven refinery transformation and co-innovation initiatives. Meanwhile, the MoU with Emerson targets the development of solutions for Energy Value Chain Optimisation, particularly in the Oils to Chemicals supply chain, aimed at improving margins through real-time industrial data integration and visualization.

These strategic alliances further bolster HMEL's efforts to drive measurable improvements in energy efficiency, sustainability, and resource optimization, positioning the company at the forefront of the digital transformation in India’s energy sector.
