Bengaluru to receive Rs 8,409 crore for development projects

The Karnataka state government in its budget announced an allocation of Rs 8,409 crore for Bengaluru’s development projects, compared to 7,795 crore in the previous fiscal year.

71.3% of the budget allocation, or Rs 6,000 crores of the total allocation for Bengaluru, has been set aside to repair the city's crumbling infrastructure. This Rs 6,000 crores will be diverted to the infrastructure sector over three years under the state scheme Amruth Nagaroththana.

Experts, on the other hand, believe that the allocation will fail to improve the situation due to inadequacies and the slow pace of infrastructure development in the city.

According to the budget, this scheme will be used to build roads, grade separators, lakes, major stormwater drains, parks, buildings, solid waste management, streetlights, and slum area development, among other things.

While the majority of the schemes announced were repeats of previous promises, two new ones include the establishment of a Atal Bihari Vajpayee Park and namma clinics.

In the Jarakabande area of Yelahanka, the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Park, which spans 350 acres of government land, promises to create large urban lunge spaces similar to Cubbon Park and Lalbagh. Previously, there have been protests against the project. The government has announced the establishment of namma clinics' in Bengaluru and other major cities in the state, taking inspiration from the Delhi government's mohalla clinics.

The state also announced a 37 km new Metro line connecting Sarjapura and Hebbala via Agara, Koramangala, and Dairy Circle. Even though no funds have been set aside for the project, the government's agreement to prepare a detailed project report has boosted hopes that it will get off the ground in the coming years.

According to the budget, 33 km of Metro line will be operational in 2022-23. Namma Metro will now have an 89 km line. The construction of a 58.19 km metro line connecting Central Silk Board and Kempegowda International Airport has begun and is expected to be completed by March 2025.

In Whitefield, KR Puram, Byappanahalli, Yeshwantpur, Jnanabharathi, and Yelahanka, work on connecting Metro stations with Indian Railways stations will be undertaken at Rs 55 crore.
