Barapullah Phase Three To Open In August Easing East South Delhi Travel

In a development expected to ease commuting between East and South Delhi, Phase Three of the signal free Barapullah elevated corridor has been completed after more than a decade of delay and is expected to open for traffic in August, officials said. The Public Works Department (PWD) of the Delhi government has communicated to Chief Minister Rekha Gupta seeking time for a formal inauguration of the new link, according to official correspondence.

The three and a half-kilometre elevated corridor will connect Sarai Kale Khan in East Delhi with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in South Delhi and is designed for largely signal free movement. Once operational, commuters travelling from Mayur Vihar and surrounding localities to Sarai Kale Khan, AIIMS and other parts of South Delhi are expected to benefit from uninterrupted flow. The route is intended to provide a direct elevated link between key residential and institutional nodes.

Authorities anticipate that the corridor will reduce journey times and relieve congestion at major bottlenecks such as National Highway 24 (NH-24), the DND Flyway and the Ring Road near Sarai Kale Khan. The project was approved in 2014 and initiated in 2015, with an original completion target set for 2017. The delivery was delayed by a seven-year land acquisition dispute, prolonged environmental clearances and technical challenges linked to construction of a major bridge across the Yamuna floodplain.

Planners characterise the project as one of the most delayed infrastructure undertakings in the city, and officials indicate that its commissioning will mark a significant improvement for east south connectivity. Formal inauguration timing remains subject to scheduling with the chief minister, and authorities say preparatory work for opening to traffic will proceed once a date is finalised.
