Delhi to Add 2,080 E-Buses, Retire 1,000 Ageing Vehicles in 2025

The Delhi Transport Department will induct 2,080 electric buses into its fleet during 2025 while phasing out 1,000 ageing vehicles to modernise the city’s public transport system.

The first phase involves the introduction of 1,040 electric buses under the National Electric Bus Programme (NEBP), a Central scheme aimed at boosting zero-emission public transit. The remaining 1,040 will be added under the Prime Minister Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement (PM E-DRIVE) scheme, which targets 14,000 electric buses across nine major cities. Officials stated that memoranda of understanding have already been signed with five concessionaires for the first batch, with agreements for the second phase expected soon. The entire fleet expansion is expected to be completed by December 2025.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has outlined a plan to maintain 5,500 buses by the end of 2025 and increase the operational fleet to 11,000 by 2026. The city will also reassess bus routes to improve service coverage. At present, Delhi operates 2,152 electric buses, with 1,752 under Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) and 400 via the Delhi Integrated Multi-Modal Transit System (DIMTS) Cluster scheme.
