Himalaya self-help groups to make people self-sufficient

People in Bordumsa district, Arunachal Pradesh, depend on agriculture and farm labour for a living. The Himalaya Self-Help Group (SHG) was founded in this village in 2015, aiming for self-sufficiency and independence.

The group had 11 members, and most of them worked in agriculture. The group regularly discusses various topics like loans, savings, group activities, etc, with a total savings of Rs 10,710.

The group was started with the North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Society (NERCRMS) under the North Eastern Region Community Resource Management Project (NERCORMP), under which villagers received financial support of Rs 46,186 and had collected a total of Rs 79,099 from different sources. The group members chose fishery as their group activity for the self-sustainability project.

Initially, they invested Rs 8,800 for purchasing fish saplings and other development costs. The total profit earned from fishing was Rs 20,000.

In every two years, they have to harvest the fish pond, which causes many changes in the organisation, including unity, leadership, self-sustainability, and other developing social services like cleaning drives, etc.

This project has improved the economic status of the local people. Moreover, SHGs express their gratitude to NERCORMP for enabling them to overcome other domestic issues through the support and execution from NERCORMP.
