NFR Electrifies 90% of Tracks; New Lines to Expand 7,362 km Network

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has achieved over 90 per cent electrification of its route network and is set for a major expansion across the region. The network currently spans 4,118 km, and new line projects will increase it to 7,362 km upon completion.

As part of the Government’s efforts to boost infrastructure and connectivity in the Northeast, NFR is executing 21 projects—including 13 new lines, two doubling projects, and six electrification schemes—covering a combined 1,965 km and valued at around Rs 95,261 crore.

The ongoing works will not only enhance operational efficiency but also reduce carbon emissions by cutting diesel usage. Recent milestones include completion of the Bhairabi–Sairang section in Mizoram and the Jiribam–Imphal line in Manipur.

These developments align with Indian Railways’ mission to achieve 100 per cent electrification nationwide and improve regional integration under the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision.
