Hindusthan National Glass to Invest Up to Rs. 5 bn in Capacity

Hindusthan National Glass & Industries plans to invest Rs. 3-5 bn over the next five months to expand manufacturing capacity and meet operating expenses during the remainder of the current financial year. The Mumbai-based container glassmaker is now part of the Africa-based Madhvani-Turner Group.

Independent Sugar Corporation acquired Hindusthan National Glass through the insolvency resolution process under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code for Rs. 22.5 bn in September 2025. Since the change in ownership, the company has invested about Rs. 7 bn in the business and received several orders during its Corporate Insolvency Resolution Process, with deliveries scheduled in the current financial year.

The company has added 1,100-1,200 tonnes per day of manufacturing capacity since the ownership change. It recently restarted the second furnace at its Bahadurgarh facility in Haryana, doubling the unit’s capacity from 300 to 600 tonnes per day.

The move has taken the company’s operational capacity to about 2,500-2,600 tonnes per day, compared with an installed capacity of 4,300 tonnes per day. Before the ownership transition, operational capacity had fallen to about 1,100-1,200 tonnes per day, compared with 2,600 tonnes per day recorded on paper when the company was bid for in 2022.

Hindusthan National Glass has also recommissioned its Puducherry facility at about 330 tonnes per day and its Naidupeta plant in Andhra Pradesh at 650 tonnes per day. Naidupeta is the company’s export hub and has been described as Asia’s largest single-furnace container glass plant, while the Rishra facility near Kolkata has installed capacity of about 950 tonnes per day.

Fuel and gas account for 20 to 25 per cent of costs and are revised every fortnight, limiting the company’s ability to pass on the full increase. Expanding exports, particularly to Europe, remains a priority as high energy and labour costs affect the region’s domestic glass industry. The company is targeting a return to profitability from the current quarter, with stronger financial benefits expected as additional capacity becomes operational.
