India and United States Agree Interim Trade Framework

Prime Minister Narendra Modi (PM) welcomed the agreement on a framework for an Interim Trade Agreement between India and the United States (US) and characterised it as significant for both nations. He said the framework exemplifies growing depth, trust and dynamism in the bilateral partnership and will provide a platform for enhanced economic engagement. The announcement was issued by the Prime Minister's Office following the agreement.

The PM expressed gratitude to President Donald Trump for his personal commitment to strengthening ties and indicated that the framework is expected to expand market access and create fresh commercial linkages. He assessed that the measures will strengthen the Make in India initiative by opening new opportunities for farmers, entrepreneurs, micro, small and medium enterprises and start-up innovators, as well as fishermen. The PM stated that the framework will generate large-scale employment for women and youth and create inclusive prospects across rural and urban communities. He underlined that improved market integration would support enterprise growth and resilience.

According to the release, the framework is intended to deepen investment and technology partnerships by encouraging collaboration in advanced sectors and facilitating knowledge exchanges. It is also expected to strengthen resilient and trusted supply chains through diversification and cooperative arrangements that reduce vulnerabilities. The Prime Minister linked the agreement to India’s vision of building a Viksit Bharat, emphasising a focus on future-oriented global partnerships that empower people and contribute to shared prosperity. He indicated that the interim arrangement would serve as a stepping stone towards broader economic cooperation.

The Prime Minister responded on the social platform X to a post by the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal, noting the significance of the interim accord and thanking the United States leadership for engagement. The government said it will pursue the framework in a manner that advances innovation, investment and job creation while safeguarding national interests. Officials indicated that further details would be worked out through bilateral consultations and technical discussions.
