India Launches World’s First Green Steel Taxonomy

India has unveiled the world’s first Taxonomy of Green Steel, a groundbreaking framework aimed at decarbonizing the steel industry. Launched by Union Minister of Steel and Heavy Industries H. D. Kumaraswamy at Vigyan Bhavan, the taxonomy defines green steel standards to support the country’s net-zero goals by 2070.

The taxonomy introduces a star-rating system to classify green steel based on emission intensity, with five-star green steel requiring emissions below 1.6 tonnes of CO2 per tonne of finished steel (tCO2/tfs). Steel with emissions below 2.2 tCO2/tfs will qualify for green certification, a benchmark expected to drive global competitiveness and innovation in low-carbon production.

Union Minister Kumaraswamy called the initiative a milestone in India’s low-carbon transition. Minister of State Bhupathi Raju Srinivasa Varma emphasized the role of the taxonomy in fostering innovation and creating a sustainable market for steel products.

The National Institute of Secondary Steel Technology (NISST) will oversee implementation, including measurement, reporting, and certification. The Ministry also conducted consultations on the National Mission on Green Steel and the Green Steel Public Procurement Policy during the event, ensuring a comprehensive approach to the industry’s decarbonization.
