Kollam-Kottayam MEMU to Be Extended to Ernakulam

The Kollam-Kottayam Mainline Electric Multiple Unit (MEMU) service will be extended to Ernakulam, with the Railways finalising the schedule and the list of stops. An official notification on the extension is scheduled to be issued on Monday, which is observed as Kerala Piravi day.

The service is intended to ease congestion on the Venad Express, which experiences severe overcrowding during the evening. It will also provide an additional travel option for passengers travelling between Kollam and Ernakulam through Kottayam.

Mavelikkara MP Kodikunnil Suresh said Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had signed the file approving the schedule and stops for the extended service. The approval covers both the operating timings and the stations at which the train will halt.

Under the schedule cited for the extension, the train will depart from Kollam at 1.40pm and from Ernakulam at 5.25pm. The timings are expected to support commuters travelling along the route and offer an alternative during the period when the Venad Express faces its highest demand.

The extension has also led to a political dispute, with leaders of the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party claiming credit for the decision. The final list of stops and the operational details will be formally available once the Railways issues its notification.
