Ernakulam Junction Platforms To Be Lengthened

The Thiruvanathapuram division of the Southern Railway has proposed extending all platforms at Ernakulam Junction railway station to accommodate longer trains with more coaches. The move is intended to address the recurring problem of trains being held on the station outskirts for lack of platforms of appropriate length. At present, only extension work on platform two has been sanctioned. The proposal seeks to enable longer rakes to be received without delay and to improve operational flow.

Passenger groups have long pressed for platform extensions and better amenities at the busy Kochi junction, and the demand was highlighted by the All Kerala Railway Users Association. The association's state president said senior divisional officials relayed a decision on extending platforms four and five at a recent meeting of the divisional railway users' consultative committee. Commuters have also been calling for platform height increases and improved water facilities.

Regular travellers described difficulties boarding and alighting on platforms three, four and five, noting that low platform heights and absence of lifts and escalators make access particularly hard for the elderly. One lecturer conveyed that passengers sometimes have to rely on handrails and step up from low platforms, which presents safety concerns. The shortage of lifts and escalators at some platforms of both Ernakulam stations was cited as an additional shortcoming.

Railways officials have been reported to have assured stakeholders that the platforms will be raised and that all works could take another three years to complete. Passengers welcomed the plan as a step towards resolving delays caused by trains waiting on the outskirts and improving overall station accessibility. The extension and elevation of platforms is expected to complement sanctioned work already under way at platform two.
