Pune Civic Body Upgrades Roads for International Cycling Event

The Pune Municipal Corporation is upgrading 84 km of roads within its jurisdiction ahead of the Pune Grand Tour 2027, an international Category 2 cycling competition. The event is scheduled to take place across Pune from January 26 to 31.

The six-stage competition will cover 1,088 km across Pune district. The first stage will include a 16 km route within the civic body’s limits, while the sixth and final stage will cover 136 km within its jurisdiction on January 31. The route under the corporation’s jurisdiction has expanded from 75 km to 136 km, prompting improvement work on 84 km of newly added stretches.

The civic body is focusing on road resurfacing, repaired footpaths, standardised signage and road markings. It is also expediting utility work along the designated routes, including water supply pipelines, sewerage networks, piped gas lines, electrical cables, CCTV infrastructure and optical fibre cables (OFC).

More than 2,000 drainage and utility chambers will be levelled to match the road surface. Speed breakers on the routes will be temporarily removed and reinstalled after the competition in line with Indian Road Congress guidelines, while road rumblers that obstruct cyclists will be chiselled out. The work will be carried out under existing contracts without requiring additional funds.

PMC road department officials, engineers, contractors and consultants have conducted detailed inspections and reviewed progress and pending technical issues during site visits and meetings. The agencies involved have been directed to expedite unfinished work, maintain required quality standards and ensure that chambers are raised precisely to road level. The corporation said the infrastructure must meet the event’s requirements while protecting cyclists and other road users.
