Sagarmala Projects Approved In Karnataka

The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways has approved eight projects in Karnataka under the Sagarmala scheme, with a combined cost of Rs 4.91 billion (bn), equivalent to Rs 4,910 million (mn). The Union minister informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply that the approvals cover coastal community development, port modernisation, and coastal shipping and inland waterways. The ministry said it conducts regular meetings with implementing agencies and the Government of Karnataka to monitor progress and resolve issues.

The ministry also convenes the Maritime States Development Council and the National Sagarmala Apex Committee with central line ministries and maritime states and union territories to facilitate coordinated implementation. States are encouraged to hold State Sagarmala Committee meetings to promote synergy among stakeholders. Such institutional mechanisms are intended to secure timely execution, optimal utilisation and long term sustainability of the projects.

The package includes the third stage expansion and modernisation of Malpe fishing harbour at a cost of Rs 500 million (mn), modernisation of Amadalli fishing harbour at Rs 190 million (mn), phase one of a skilling project under DDU GKY at Rs 15.3 million (mn), and installation of firefighting equipment at Karwar Port at Rs 182.1 million (mn). Project documentation indicates that four projects have been completed and four are under implementation, with anticipated completion dates ranging into 2025 and 2026 for ongoing works. The ministry said it will continue engagement through central and state committees to track milestones and assist with administrative or technical obstacles. The disclosure reflects the central effort to enhance coastal infrastructure and community services in Karnataka.
