State Raises Farmer Compensation Amid Infrastructure Push

In a bid to overcome local opposition to land acquisition, the state government is devising a new approach, promising enhanced compensation for affected farmers. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar disclosed this strategy during the inauguration of the Chandani Chowk flyover, highlighting the imperative to complete crucial projects such as airports expediently.

"While striving for inclusivity, satisfying all parties becomes intricate, especially for pivotal ventures like airports," remarked Ajit Pawar. He further revealed the government's intent to offer compensation packages enabling farmers to procure agricultural land elsewhere.

With a pressing need for a new airport in Pune due to its significance as a strategic airfield for the Indian Air Force's impending squadron expansions, former Chief Minister Fadnavis emphasised the challenge of accommodating both military and civilian aviation requirements. "Direct international flights and enhanced civil aviation infrastructure aspirations are stymied due to slot limitations," Fadnavis noted.

Having secured the essential approvals from the Central government for the Purandar Airport project, Fadnavis underscored the urgency of accelerating the land acquisition process. He anticipates a meeting called by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde next week to address this matter. Fadnavis also expects Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar's involvement to expedite proceedings, given his representation of the adjacent Baramati constituency.

Highlighting Pune's allure for IT companies and manufacturers, Fadnavis pointed out the necessity of a new airport to attract investors. "Recent years have witnessed the migration of IT companies from Pune, but now, due to infrastructure challenges, businesses from Bengaluru seek relocation to Pune. Additionally, manufacturers express interest in establishing plants near Pune," Fadnavis explained, underscoring the potential economic boost through an expanded airport.

The government's commitment to offering improved compensation to farmers demonstrates its resolve to balance progress with community interests, fostering a path toward essential infrastructure development.
