Vijayawada Dasara Congestion Falls 62 Per Cent with Smart Traffic

Vijayawada city police recorded a 62 per cent reduction in traffic congestion during the 2026 Dasara festivities compared with 2025. The improvement was attributed to real-time monitoring, information technology (IT) and coordinated traffic management. The arrangements were implemented while the city hosted the national-level Saras exhibition and Vijayawada Utsav 2.0, both of which drew additional visitors and vehicles.

Data released by the police department showed that total traffic congestion fell from 1,311 km in 2025 to 497 km this year. Average daily congestion declined from 119 km to 50 km. The number of severe traffic bottlenecks dropped from 221 last year to 38 in 2026, representing a reduction of about 83 per cent.

Police deployed IT-based systems to monitor road conditions as thousands of devotees visited Vijayawada for Dasara and the two fairs. The AP ASTraM system provided real-time traffic monitoring and alerts, enabling personnel to identify congestion points and take corrective action. The system supported operational decisions alongside the deployment of traffic staff across key routes.

Managing vehicle movement was challenging because of large crowds attending the Saras exhibition and the Vijayawada carnival. Advance planning and coordinated deployment helped the police handle the increase in traffic. Personnel worked round the clock under the supervision of senior officers and implemented diversions around the Saras venue, Eluru Road, the entry gate of Pandit Nehru Bus Station, Krishnalanka and adjoining areas.

The traffic arrangements involved coordination between senior officers and field personnel throughout the festivities. City police commissioner S.V. Raja Sekhara Babu credited Traffic DCP Shirin Begum and other senior officers with coordinating the measures. Senior officials also acknowledged the work of traffic staff and thanked citizens and devotees for cooperating with the police and following traffic regulations.
