Neilsoft’s ConstructMonitor will remotely monitor construction quality

Neilsoft, a focused engineering services and software solutions (ER&D) provider servicing global customers in the AEC or construction, manufacturing and industrial plants segments, announced the launch of ConstructMonitor, its SaaS solution for managing construction quality and progress. The solution, developed in collaboration between Neilsoft and Tokyo-based Fujita Corporation, is aimed at addressing construction project quality issues in larger construction projects like commercial offices, high-rise buildings, data centres, hospitals, industrial plants, factories, malls, IT parks and other infrastructure projects.

Several large or complex construction projects globally adopt Building Information Modeling (BIM) methodology integrating various stakeholders (Owners, architects, engineers, contractors, etc) with a single source of truth across the entire project lifecycle through a common data environment (CDE). While BIM has found significantly higher adoption in the design phase of projects, construction quality and variation from as-designed BIM models during the construction phase remains a challenge. ConstructMonitor has been developed to ensure better quality and progress monitoring and to identify variations from the as-designed BIM model.

Quality defects at construction sites such as design deviations, incorrect element sizes and missing structural elements have cascading repercussions on the construction sequence. These also lead to the need for rework as well as safety hazards, material wastage, cost overruns and delays. ConstructMonitor enables general contractors, EPC firms, architects, project and construction management firms, owners to remotely monitor design deviations at construction sites (vis-à-vis design BIM models) with LiDAR-enabled iPhones (on a daily or weekly basis) and or terrestrial 3-D laser scanners (once a month). Construction-site reality captured using point cloud data is relayed via the company's cloud platform to a processing server where specialised algorithms make object-level comparison with the BIM design data and identify deviations.

Speaking at the launch, Raghuram NM, President, Neilsoft India Solutions Business, said, "Neilsoft’s BIM journey started around 2007 and we have been fortunate to get to support leading architects, engineering firms, contractors globally on several BIM projects. BIM, as a methodology, has seen increasing acceptance over the last 15+ years and the construction industry today is very actively embracing technology to improve efficiencies across the project life-cycle. At Neilsoft, we are constantly investing in developing multi-disciplinary engineering and technology capabilities to add higher value to our customers in their digital transformation initiatives. We are developing our own IP-led solutions to address real-world customer challenges across the design-construct-operate phases and ConstructMonitor is our first IP-led solution for addressing quality issues during the construction phase.”

ConstructMonitor is offered as a SaaS solution for each client or project and is deployable either on public or private cloud. The solution offers customisable visualisation capabilities and intuitive dashboards providing a comprehensive view of the construction project and empowers remote users to determine the 'as-built' accuracy of the under-construction building. This early identification of costly variations and errors in the construction project lifecycle helps control construction quality, keeps projects on schedule and enables timely remote monitoring of quality and progress without frequent site visits.

Neilsoft (established in 1993), headquartered in Pune (India), is a global engineering services and software solutions company servicing clients in the AEC or construction, process and manufacturing industries to help enhance their project efficiency, increase technology adoption and achieve digital transformation. The company's strength lies in its ability to integrate domain, platform, and technical skills while delivering superior value and quality to its clients. Its proven international experience of 25+ years in handling multi-disciplinary and multi-sectoral projects helps it deliver integrated services and solutions for clients across the globe. Neilsoft Architecture and Engineering teams seamlessly integrate with its client's in-house teams and act as a virtual extension of their enterprise.

ConstructMonitor is a construction management solution jointly developed by Fujita and Neilsoft to address construction quality issues causing construction cost overrun and rework. The tool integrates Neilsoft’s experience in AEC and BIM and Fujita's industry experience in construction. It leverages building information model (BIM) technology to compare the 'as-actual' construction against 'as-designed' BIM models, identifying quality problems early, thereby preventing costly rework and ensuring adherence to project standards and timelines. The solution enables stakeholders like general contractors, EPCs, architects and design firms, PMCs, developers and owners to capture the quality and progress of construction projects in real-time and effectively communicate or coordinate with vendors or sub-vendors in a timely manner.

Handling concrete better

Efficiently handling the transportation and placement of concrete is essential to help maintain the quality of construction, meet project timelines by minimising downtimes, and reduce costs – by 5 to 15 per cent, according to Sandeep Jain, Director, Arkade Developers. CW explores what the efficient handling of concrete entails.Select wellFirst, a word on choosing the right equipment, such as a mixer with a capacity aligned to the volume required onsite, from Vaibhav Kulkarni, Concrete Expert. “An overly large mixer will increase the idle time (and cost), while one that ..

Elevated floors!

Raised access flooring, also called false flooring, is a less common interiors feature than false ceilings, but it has as many uses – if not more.A raised floor is a modular panel installed above the structural floor. The space beneath the raised flooring is typically used to accommodate utilities such as electrical cables, plumbing and HVAC systems. And so, raised flooring is usually associated with buildings with heavy cabling and precise air distribution needs, such as data centres. That said, CW interacted with designers and architects and discovered that false flooring can come in handy ..

The Variation Challenge

A variation or change in scope clause is defined in construction contracts to take care of situations arising from change in the defined scope of work. Such changes may arise due to factors such as additions or deletions in the scope of work, modifications in the type, grade or specifications of materials, alterations in specifications or drawings, and acts or omissions of other contractors. Further, ineffective planning, inadequate investigations or surveys and requests from the employer or those within the project’s area of influence can contribute to changes in the scope of work. Ext..
