We erect all of our structural steelwork on our own

Anshul Singhal, President-Commercial, JSW Severfield Structures Ltd

JSW Severfield Structures is a Joint Venture company between JSW Building Systems Ltd - a wholly owned subsidiary of JSW Steel Ltd of India and Severfield - Rowen Plc of the UK to jointly create a new structural steelwork business. The company is involved in the design, fabrication and erection of structural steelwork, principally to service the Indian markets. It offers the best quality steel structures to enable India access to world class technology, to modernise its infrastructure development. Anshul Singhal, President-Commercial, JSW Severfield Structures Ltd talks about the company's operations and its future plans.

Please elucidate the technology used in the erection of steel structures?
Our primary focus is the supply, fabrication and erection of structural steelwork for the Indian market. The erection of structural steelwork provides a visual view of the company and can be both a very simple or extremely complex operation. Typically a simple project would be a warehouse and complex one, a long span bridge in a different location. The company retains all the skills and expertise to erect structures across all the total project sectors.

Which are your major sectors?
We mainly operate in commercial, infrastructure, oil and gas, construction, power, high-rise, airports, residential sectors.

Do you have any technical-tie ups for the erection of these structures?
One of our organisations' major advantage is that we erect all our structural steelwork on our own. This is very unusual in India wherein general contractors only fabricate. It is very important for us to do our own erection to maintain end-to-end control of the structural steel upto the point of its final use. As one of our biggest USP is speed, it would become meaningless if we fabricate steel and depend on somebody else for its erection.

How much have the rising steel prices affected your business in India? Increasing steel prices are unlikely to impact our business adversely. Let's not forget that the concrete buildings also contain steel element in the form of TMT bars. Therefore the relative impact of cost increase is not significant.

Do you think a substitute for steel can be available in wake of this price-rise?
To my knowledge, there is no economical substitute for steel, which is a high quality product that provides strength, durability, and sustainability, anti corrosive and totally recyclable. The only alternative I would suggest for the construction industry would be to try and fully understand the holistic benefits that properly manage steel construction offers so as to make the most of our techno commercial expertise.

Kindly highlight each of the companies' roles in the organisation?
JSW Severfield Structures Ltd is totally integrated as such both parties play an equal part in the running of the company. Severfield Rowen brings over 25 years of fabrication experience to the project, while JSW retains the Indian operational experience and local knowledge and gives the business a street-smart edge.

Please elaborate on your plans for the future.
We are equally capable of entering the residential segment and have already received an order for a 21 storey residential building in Mumbai which you will hear about in the time to come.

We will be setting up many more in the near future. Expansion is strategic and inevitable for our business and you will hear our concrete plans soon.
