Kanpur airport to be connected with major cities

Kanpur (Ahirwan) Airport is poised for expansion. After the expansion, citizens of Kanpur can avail direct flights to Gujrat, Tamilnadu and Maharashtra. The airport will soon be extended as the land for it has been identified and soon the acquisition proceedings will be underway. According to Sub Divisional Magistrate, Kanpur, IP Uttam, the airport authority has identified a land of around 100 acres in Sheikhpur and Mavaiya villages.

Both villages are adjacent to the airport and a report regarding this has been sent to the Union Civil Aviation Ministry. Kanpur airport, also known as Chakeri airport, was originally designated to Indian Air Force, and regular flights to Delhi, Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Kolkata, Banglore, Chennai and Mumbai were operating during the 1970s.

But due to some reasons flights were reduced and now they operate between Kolkata and Allahabad airport only. When the Delhi - Kanpur - Kolkata flights were launched the then civil aviation minister Vayalar Ravi had promised that Kanpur would be connected with other metro cities as well. Tehsil authorities informed that as soon as ministry would give green signal land acquisition proceedings would begin.

Earlier, passengers bound overseas or other parts of the country used to travel around 80 kilometers to Amausi Airport, Lucknow. The civil air terminal of Kanpur airport was reopened in December 2004 and since then regular flights are operational from this airport. According to airport authorities anticipating the growth in passengers, Airports Authority of India has planned to expand the Chakeri civil enclave.
