Keralam Cooperative Sector's Aviation Entry Signals Diversification

The Keralam government's decision to permit the cooperative sector to launch flight services reflects the diversification of the state's cooperative movement, Cooperation Minister M Liju said. He was speaking at the first general body meeting of the Keralam Civil Aviation Development Cooperative Society in Thiruvananthapuram on Wednesday.

The society plans to introduce the first flight services by India's cooperative sector. Liju said the government was encouraging cooperative institutions and private entrepreneurs to accelerate the state's development, while maintaining that the cooperative movement could expand into sectors beyond its traditional areas of operation.

He said the government would support cooperative societies seeking to restore public confidence in the movement. The minister added that cooperative institutions in Keralam were conducting business worth more than Rs. 6.5 tn and had significant potential to contribute further to the state's economic development.

Liju also said public-cooperative enterprises had been proposed in the state government's budget. He welcomed the establishment of the aviation society as a step towards putting that policy idea into practice.

During the event, the minister handed the society's registration certificate, bylaws and category statement to its chief promoter, C N Vijayakrishnan. The meeting marked an early organisational step for the proposed aviation venture, with the society's governing documents and registration formally presented.

Chief Minister V D Satheesan had recently said the government had authorised the society to begin flight services. Speaking at the silver jubilee celebrations of the Calicut City Service Cooperative Society in Kozhikode on Sunday, he said the cooperative sector would launch flight services for the first time in India. The proposal therefore represents an expansion of the cooperative model into civil aviation, alongside its established presence in financial and other economic activities.
