PM Modi Inaugurates Leh Airport Terminal Costing Rs. 6.4 bn
The terminal covers 23,810 square metres and combines modern airport infrastructure with design elements inspired by Ladakh’s local art and cultural heritage. A video shared by Union Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu showed the check-in area, airline counters, interiors and architectural features of the new facility.
Leh Airport is situated at an altitude of 3,256 metres above sea level. The expanded infrastructure is intended to improve passenger movement, strengthen airport operations and provide additional capacity for tourism and other travel to the Himalayan region.
Preparations at the terminal were reviewed by the Ladakh Administration before the inauguration. Ladakh Chief Secretary Ashish Kundra inspected the departure and arrival lounges, waiting area, food lounge and frisking area on October 8. Airport Director A Umasankar briefed him on ongoing work and the arrangements being made for the opening.
Kundra instructed officials to complete the remaining work and ensure essential passenger facilities were operational, with attention to safety, convenience and passenger comfort. The terminal also includes geothermal energy systems intended to improve energy efficiency and reduce its carbon footprint.
The terminal was among five development projects worth approximately Rs. 33.5 bn scheduled for inauguration in Ladakh. Travellers have been advised to confirm flight details and terminal information with their airlines before travelling to Leh Airport, particularly as operations adjust to the expanded facility.
