Gurugram to Upgrade 100 Roads Under 30-Day Challenge

The Haryana government has launched a 30-day challenge to upgrade 100 roads across Gurugram, with a November 7 deadline. The work will include recarpeting, streetlight installation, footpaths, lane markings and clear signage, officials said.

Roads selected for the initiative must be at least 500 metres long and will receive comprehensive improvements rather than basic patchwork. Information boards carrying QR codes will be installed on every identified road, enabling residents to access details about the responsible department, designated officer and project timeline.

The directives were issued by Rajesh Khullar, chief principal secretary to the Haryana chief minister, during a meeting with officials from the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority, Municipal Corporation of Gurugram and Haryana Shehri Vikas Pradhikaran. The meeting also launched a 24-hour civic complaint redressal challenge, a 10 iconic roads programme and the Our 500 Metre Area plan.

Under the complaint initiative, residents will be able to report major garbage accumulation points, potholes, sewer overflows, non-functional streetlights and trees requiring pruning through an online platform. Depending on the complaint, officials will have to resolve cases within 24, 48 or 72 hours. The administration has proposed recovering compensation from employees when delays are established as resulting from negligence, including a payment of Rs. 5,000 to the complainant.

Ten iconic roads will be developed with improved streetscapes and public amenities, including designated smoking zones and enforcement of no-smoking areas. Body-camera-equipped teams will issue fines, while wheelchairs will be available at the locations and information boards will outline rules and penalties. The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram will also penalise spitting and the disposal of chewing gum in public places.

The Our 500 Metre Area plan will involve resident welfare associations, schools, market associations and other organisations in maintaining a clean and organised 500-metre radius. The three civic bodies must prepare weekly scorecards on road, sanitation and other works, with the progress published in newspapers every Saturday and signed by responsible officials.
