Mumbai Flyover Gets December 2027 Deadline to Cut Andheri Travel Time

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has set December 2027 as the target for completing a 206-metre flyover connecting Yari Road and Lokhandwala Back Road in Andheri West. The project is designed to reduce travel time across the Kavthe Creek corridor from about 30 minutes to approximately 10 minutes.

Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar directed civic officials to meet the deadline after inspecting the site and reviewing construction progress. The flyover is being built near Amarnath Tower at the Yari Road-Lokhandwala Back Road junction, where Kavthe Creek has prevented the completion of a planned road connection.

Under the BMC’s Development Plan, an 18.30-metre-wide Development Plan road has been proposed on the eastern and western sides of the creek. The flyover will establish a road link across the waterway and provide direct connectivity between Yari Road, Panchmarg and Vesave, along with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar, Lokhandwala Complex and Samarth Nagar.

The structure will comprise a 110-metre main bridge, a 40-metre approach road on the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Nagar side and a 56-metre approach road near Amarnath Tower. The bridge and both approaches will be 11 metres wide. The main span will use a single-span steel basket-handle arch design, with tension rods connecting the steel arch to the bridge deck slab. Reinforced cement concrete abutment walls and caps will be supported by pile foundations.

The civic body said the project will strengthen east-west connectivity and ease congestion for residents of Vesave, Yari Road, Lokhandwala and nearby neighbourhoods. It will also provide a more direct route between areas separated by the creek and the incomplete Development Plan road. The flyover could become an alternative route after the proposed Versova-Bandra Sea Link and Mumbai Coastal Road Project North become operational, although the current completion target remains December 2027.
