Construction work of Chennai Metro phase 2 picks up pace

The people residing in the area from Madhavaram to Taramani via Ayanavaram, Chennai can finally be free from road traffic because of the underground metro in the next five years, if the contractors complete the work within the deadline.

The phase II project construction was started by the Chennai Metro Rail a couple of months ago. The construction now has reached a level where the diaphragm walls are being built by contractors in various locations. This will connect the Madhavaram and Taramani by an underground network.

It is important that these walls are built before working on the tunnels as they are an important component.

CMRL officials mentioned that a duration of six to eight months is required for building the diaphragm walls as it is a complex task.

The construction of the diaphragm wall has begun in areas like Madhavaram, Murari Hospital, Ayanavaram, Purasawalkam, Chetpet, Royapettah Government Hospital, and Greenway’s Road. The trench cutters from Germany that help in digging deeper into the soil are being used in multiple places. The tunnel boring machines identification process is going on right now, an official said.

Additionally, he stated that in the creation of the underground stretch, tunnelling work is the most challenging. The work will commence post-construction of the diaphragm wall by mid-next year. The process lasts between two to three years.
