Coonoor Railway Station Redeveloped Under Amrit Bharat

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the redeveloped Coonoor Railway Station through video conferencing and dedicated the facility to tourists and the general public. The formal opening at the station was conducted by Udhagamandalam BJP MLA Bhojarajan during a special function held at Coonoor Railway Station. The ceremony followed the virtual inauguration and included local officials and members of the public.

The station has been redeveloped at a cost of Rs 121.8 million (mn) under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme while retaining its heritage architecture. It is one of three railway stations in Tamil Nadu selected for redevelopment under the scheme. The renovated station features realistic murals of the wildlife of the Nilgiris such as elephants, tigers, gaur, bears, Nilgiri tahr, black panthers, lion‑tailed macaque, wild boar and porcupines, which have emerged as a major attraction for visitors.

The redevelopment also showcases a scale model of the UNESCO World Heritage Nilgiri Mountain Railway alongside murals of native birds including the Malabar grey hornbill and various parrots, all of which have been well received by visitors. Passenger amenities have been upgraded with modern toilets, improved drinking water facilities and other basic infrastructure to enhance the travel experience. These improvements aim to balance preservation of the station's character with contemporary needs.

The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme has redeveloped 75 railway stations across 20 states with enhanced passenger amenities, and the Prime Minister inaugurated the group of stations by video conferencing from Punjab. The inaugural function at Coonoor was attended by Bhojarajan, Coonoor MLA KM Raju, Gudalur MLA Dravida Mani, officials from the Salem Railway Division and members of the public, who observed the traditional lamp lighting before the dedication. Bhojarajan said he was delighted that the station had been modernised without disturbing its heritage and that the upgrade would support tourism to the Nilgiri district. The project was presented as part of one of the world's largest station redevelopment programmes under the Amrit Bharat initiative."
