DDA to draft transport plan to link Narela, redevelop it

Narela will soon be connected to the rest of Delhi by a comprehensive transportation plan developed by the Delhi Development Authority, which will also convert Narela into a sub-city like Rohini, Dwarka, and Sarita Vihar.

According to sources, the agency has contacted Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to expedite the building of the phase IV component Rithala-Narela line, while Delhi Transport Corporation has been contacted to increase bus frequency.

The sub-city, which has enormous expanses of undeveloped land and thousands of unoccupied apartments existing in a dilapidated state, is languishing as a ghost town. Recently, Lieutenant According to sources, all stakeholders attended a meeting that was presided over by the LG and identified the largest barriers to development as Narela's inadequate connectivity with the rest of the city.

As part of its phase-IV project, the DMRC has abandoned its initial proposal to operate a light rail transit system called metrolite in favour of a traditional metro with three carriages between Rithala and Narela corridor. Governor VK Saxena requested DDA to make serious efforts to revive the sub-city.

"Given that Delhi as a whole is now crowded, living in Narela could be a decent option. But because there is no connectivity, no one wants to go there. People may move there and live once a transportation hub is established, a metro line is built, and DTC service is enhanced "According to another official, if the middle class relocates there, the poor will also find work and move into homes constructed under the EWS programmes.

The DDA intends to establish and manage a "transit hub" that will link the metro corridor with other transportation options.
