Katra-Banihal Section Gets 100 kmph Speed Limit

The maximum permissible speed on the 111-kilometre Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra-Banihal section has been increased from 75 kmph to 100 kmph, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on October 2, 2026. The revised limit was successfully tested during the day.

The speed increase covers the section forming part of the USBRL project. The change is intended to support smoother train operations and enable faster movement along the route, which connects Katra with Banihal in Jammu and Kashmir.

Vande Bharat Express, operating as Train Nos. 26401 and 26404, crossed the Chenab Bridge and the Anji Bridge at 100 kmph during the test. The run set a new record for the train on the route, according to the minister.

The Chenab Bridge is described as the world’s highest railway bridge, while the Anji Bridge is India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge. Their successful crossing at the revised speed represents a significant operational development for train services on the Katra-Banihal section.

The Railways said the enhancement would reduce travel time and improve the overall journey for passengers. It is also expected to support safer and more comfortable operations as services on the USBRL project continue to develop.

The revised speed limit follows testing of the track and associated infrastructure on the 111-kilometre section. The milestone comes as railway connectivity through the challenging terrain between Katra and Banihal is being strengthened through upgraded infrastructure and improved operating speeds.
