L&T-Alstom Partnership to Upgrade Mumbai Metro Line 4

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Alstom Transport have secured a contract to supply key systems for Mumbai Metro’s 35.2 km Line 4 and Line 4A (Green Line), linking Wadala, Kasarvadavali, and Gaimukh. Package CA-234 includes 39 six-coach trains (234 coaches), CBTC signalling, telecommunications, platform screen doors, and depot machinery. Following bid reissuance by MMRDA in February 2024, L&T emerged as the lowest bidder. The project, funded by a Rs 49 billion loan from Germany’s KfW, will take 3.22 years. Phase 1 certification is targeted for August 2026, though prior delays may impact the timeline. Maintenance will continue for 17 years.

Titagarh Rail Systems Secures Adani Cement Order for 16 Wagon Rakes
Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL) has won a contract from Ambuja Cements and ACC Limited, part of Adani Cement, worth Rs 5.37 billion. The order includes 16 BCFCM (Bogie Covered Fly Ash or Cement Wagon) rake wagons with BVCM (Bogie Brake Van Type) wagons, reinforcing TRSL’s freight rolling stock expertise. These wagons are designed to optimise fly ash and cement transport, ensuring cost-effective logistics. Delivery is set between January 2026 and March 2027. TRSL’s Deputy MD, Anil Kumar Agarwal, stated the project underscores their commitment to efficient rail-based freight solutions, supporting India’s infrastructure and modernising the country’s rail logistics network.

India’s First Locally Assembled Driverless Train Arrives in Bengaluru
India’s first driverless assembled metro train has arrived at the Hebbagodi depot in Bengaluru, marking a major milestone for the city’s Namma Metro Yellow Line. Manufactured by Titagarh Rail Systems Limited (TRSL), the six-coach train will undergo coupling, static, and signalling tests before anti-collision trials commence soon. The 19.15 km Yellow Line, connecting RV Road to Bommasandra, is expected to launch by April. TRSL, under a Rs 15.78 billion contract, is producing 34 of 36 trains for Bengaluru Metro. Initially, four trains will operate at 20-25 minute intervals, catering to 6,000-15,000 passengers per peak hour, enhancing urban transit efficiency.

Northeast Rail Infra Gets Rs 104.4 Bn Boost
Indian Railways has allocated Rs 104.4 billion to enhance railway infrastructure in the Northeast, over five times the Rs 21.22 billion annual average from 2009-2014. The budget supports new lines, track renewals, road safety, bridges, and customer amenities. Since 2014, 1,824 km of new tracks have been laid, surpassing Sri Lanka’s rail network. Electrification is set for completion by December 2025. Under the Amrit Bharat Stations Scheme, 92 stations will be modernised. The Bhairabi-Sairang project in Mizoram is due by July 2025, while national expansion includes new Vande Bharat, Amrit Bharat, and Namo Bharat trains.

UPMRC Begins U-Girder Casting for Agra Metro’s Second Corridor
The Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRC) has started casting U-girders for the second corridor of the Agra Metro, running from Agra Cantt to Kalindi Vihar. The casting process is underway at the Dauki casting yard in Agra district. U-girders, crucial for metro construction, form the platform above viaduct piers to support tracks. Approximately 800 U-girders and 400 other girders are required for the 16 km corridor. Tunnelling work for the underground section between SN Medical College and RBS College is nearing completion. The metro project aims to improve urban transport and enhance connectivity for Agra’s residents.
