Lucknow Metro To Add Coaches For Line 2 Expansion

Lucknow’s urban commute is set for sizeable upgrade as the Uttar Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (UPMRCL) moves to expand the city network with additional train cars for Line 2. UPMRCL has floated a tender for the design, manufacture, supply, testing and commissioning of 45 new standard gauge metro cars together with specialised staff training to ensure the service can handle anticipated passenger volumes from commencement. The procurement aims to boost capacity and reduce waiting times.\n\nThe Phase 1B Line 2 project was approved by the Union Cabinet, chaired by the prime minister, in August 2025 and is intended to improve connectivity across the city. Line 2 will extend for 11.165 km and comprise 12 stations, including seven underground and five elevated stops concentrated around Old Lucknow. The extension builds on the operational North South corridor and seeks to replicate the benefits observed on Line 1 for a broader commuter base.\n\nLine 2 is expected to improve access to key commercial and cultural areas in Old Lucknow by linking markets such as Aminabad, Yahiyaganj, Pandeyganj and Chowk with institutions. Improved access will include King George’s Medical University and heritage sites including Bara Imambara, Chota Imambara, the Clock Tower and Rumi Darwaza. Planners anticipate that shifting commuters to the metro will ease pressure on narrow streets, reduce private vehicle use and deliver smoother journeys during peak periods.\n\nAuthorities have emphasised the need for operational readiness and the tender includes training modules to prepare staff for the expanded fleet and new underground operations. Delivering testing and commissioning before passenger services commence is intended to support reliable operations and high frequency from the outset. Municipal planners view the expanded rolling stock as central to the city’s transit strategy, providing resilience as ridership grows and enabling integrated travel across Lucknow’s evolving public transport network services.
