Mumbai Metro Green Line to Get Driverless Trains in December 2026

The first of 39 six-car driverless trainsets for Mumbai Metro Lines 4 and 4A was unveiled on Thursday. The trains will serve the 35.3-km Wadala-Kasarvadavali corridor, also known as the Green Line, which will have 32 stations across Mumbai and Thane.

Alstom expects to ship the first trainset from its facility at Sri City in Andhra Pradesh by the end of November, with arrival in Mumbai expected in the first or second week of December 2026. The journey is expected to take seven to 10 days. As the dedicated carshed at Mogharpada is not yet available, the trains will initially be stationed at existing depots.

The fleet will comprise 234 metro cars arranged into 39 trainsets and is being supplied under an integrated systems contract awarded to Larsen & Toubro by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority. The first 20 trainsets will be parked at Mandale depot near Mankhurd, which can accommodate more than 72 rakes, while the remaining 19 will be stationed at Kasheli depot on Metro Line 5.

The trains have been engineered at Alstom’s Bengaluru centre and manufactured at its Sri City facility. Propulsion systems are being produced in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and bogies in Savli, Gujarat. Alstom said the trainsets were engineered and built within 14 months under the Make in India initiative.

Based on the Alstom Metropolis model, the trains will have a maximum safe speed of 90 kmph and an operational speed of 80 kmph. They will feature Grade of Automation 4 driverless operation, airflow-based cooling, wheelchair access, bicycle racks, electrical braking and cybersecurity measures. Alstom will provide five years of FlexCare Perform maintenance for all 234 cars and the signalling system, which uses Urbalis Forward Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) technology. The Mandale depot will house the operations control centre, while Mogharpada will serve as the backup control centre.
