Mumbai Metro Line 5 to cross over Kasheli creek in Bhiwandi

The Mumbai Metro Line 5 of 24.90 km, spread across 422 metres (m), will cross over Kasheli creek in Bhiwandi. The corridor work on this Metro Line is at full speed. It is also India's first elevated metro line, which will pass above the water body in Mumbai.

It will be the first metro in Mumbai to be built above 15 metres of water. Once completed, passengers will get the best view of the creek while Metro Line 3 passes under the Mithi river.

According to the officials, a total of nine pillars will be used in building along the stretch. The drilling work in the creek has started to cast the pillars by using the reverse circulation drilling (RCD) method. For lifting the Vibro hammer, a 150-MT crane is placed on the barge. The Vibro hammer has been clasped on the top of the permanent steel casing to drill into the creek bed. After this, the RCD rig has to be mounted on top of the steel casing for further drilling.

The Metro Line has two phases, from Thane to Bhiwandi and Bhiwandi to Kalyan. Out of the total, 32.61% of work lies in the first phase, which is completed. The expected completion date is August 2022. M/s Delhi Metro Rail Corporation has to finalise the alignment and make a feasibility report for phase 2.
