Nashik Mobility Plan Proposes Light Metro and 1,339 More Buses

Nashik is planning a major transformation of its urban transport infrastructure to address traffic congestion, rapid urbanisation and rising travel demand. The revised Comprehensive Mobility Plan (CMP), prepared by MahaMetro for the Nashik Municipal Corporation, sets out a long-term transport vision extending to 2056. It outlines projects valued at approximately Rs. 268.39 bn, covering light metro rail, city bus expansion, road improvements, bridges, cycle tracks, pedestrian facilities and integrated transport hubs.

A central proposal is a 58.08-km light metro network to improve links between residential, commercial and transport corridors. Routes under consideration include Gangapur village to Nashik Road railway station, Mumbai Naka to Pathardi Phata, and Ambad to Ozar Airport. The plan does not establish construction timelines, as the projects remain subject to approvals and funding arrangements.

The mobility plan proposes adding 1,339 buses to the city’s public transport fleet and developing or upgrading 735 bus stops. It also includes 123 km of circular bus routes and 75.3 km of feeder routes, measures intended to improve connectivity and reduce dependence on private vehicles.

Other proposed works include approximately 125 km of pedestrian facilities, 88.3 km of cycle tracks and nearly 14 km of pedestrian and cycling routes along the Godavari riverfront. New road links, junction improvements, river bridges and grade separators are also envisaged to ease traffic movement across the city.

With the Simhastha Kumbh Mela approaching in 2027-28, the plan gives emphasis to park-and-ride facilities, shuttle buses, dedicated passenger drop-off points and traffic management near religious destinations such as Panchavati and Ramkund. The revised CMP is awaiting the necessary approvals and is expected to be opened for public suggestions and objections after consideration by the municipal corporation. The proposed cost of Rs. 268.39 bn is separate from the unverified figure of Rs. 2.26 tn. Individual projects will require separate approvals, financing and implementation schedules before construction can begin.
